SEFS Genetics Lab

School of Environmental and Forest Sciences
170 Bloedel Hall, University of Washington

Shared lab equipment for molecular applications

The mission of the SEFS Shared Genetics Lab is to provide a facility that supports cutting-edge molecular research with environmental applications. The lab provides training and assistance with genetic research projects, including the processing and analysis of a variety of plant, fungal, and animal sample types. The lab specializes in processing environmental DNA (e.g., water, air, and soil samples) and other non-invasive samples (e.g., scat, hair, saliva) characterized by low-copy, degraded DNA. Separate rooms for pre- and post-PCR reduce contamination risk for these samples. The laboratory is equipped with new technologies, such as a droplet digital PCR machine, to detect and analyze very low levels of DNA.

This laboratory is open for use by UW students and researchers interested in using the equipment for genetic research. Equipment use and contract work are also available to external researchers. First time users should contact the lab manager for details.
